IMF: Low Interest Rates Building Pressure For Riskier Long-Term Investments

(Updates with IMF comment, report details and background throughout, starting in third paragraph)

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--Long-term investors such as pension funds and insurance companies are more wary of risky assets after the global financial crisis, but low interest rates are building pressures to boost their portfolios with more dicey investments, the International Monetary Fund said Tuesday.

Furthermore, new regulations designed to help reduce exposure to high risk investments may actually be undermining global financial stability, the IMF said.

As "real money" institutional investors--as opposed to funds that borrow to invest--move more into short-term market positions, there is less stability in the overall system. Previously, private long-term investors would be more willing to hold onto assets in a gloomy economy, providing a measure of stability as a market returns to health.

Combined with the search for higher yields, particularly in emerging or non-traditional markets, the new dynamics of asset allocations are raising the risk of sudden investment reversals, staff said in the fund's new Global Financial Stability Report.
