by Car Insurance
I am 16 years old and from the UK. I will be turning 17 in november and getting a driving licence. I was offered a car from my step dad. It is a 1996 Honda Civic Coupe LSi in green/blue. It has a 1.5 litre engine, and although not very powerful, it is very desireble to steal. It might be important to mention here that it has an automatic transmission. This car has a sentimentle value and it is the first car I ever drove. I have tried online insurance sites to see how much it would be to insure. All the prices are very high. I just wanted some advice on how to insure this car cheap. Or at least cheaper then the quotes I have been getting. I am willing to keep it in a garage, it has an alarm and I will use a steering lock, but the quotes are still expensive. If your dad or mom was a member of the US armed forces or a US government employee, you could join my company, USAA (United Services Auto Association) which began by 2 American Army officers insuring each other shortly before WWII. I don’t know if they would insure non-Americans, but I do know that they do cover US service personnel when they are out of the US. You can check their website at http://www.usaa.com to see if you qualify. There was only one time that they didn’t pay a claim I sent to them and that was because the damage was less than my deductible. They have proven to be the most reliable and mostly the cheapest I have had since I signed with them in 1977, though a couple times I strayed from them to get a cheaper premium, but paid for it with crummy service from the other companies. back to answer your question,, is the sentimentle value you give this car worth the quote?.. cuase even with insurance you may not get the same car back if too damaged if it were stolen or something…tell the insurance company what they wanna hear…like you will never drive it or you only go to school and back and it will be garage stored and so on…..and you can raise you deductible if you want lower payments, meaning if there were damage to the vehicle you shell out X amount…ie if it were $1000, then your ins. is cheaper vs. if you carried a 250 deduct….

CHICAGO — A few months ago, Saman Jayasekara was shopping online for cheaper car insurance when he came across a new product from Progressive Corp. that offered him the chance to save as much as 30 percent.
But there was a catch. He would have to install a device in his Hyundai Sonata that would monitor his driving habits, such as when he drove, miles driven and number of sudden stops. Progressive would analyze the data to determine whether he deserved a discount.
Jayasekara, a software programmer in New Jersey, enrolled, and after a month he received a 23 percent discount, which could save him hundreds of dollars a year.
“Everybody is scared of being monitored,” Jayasekara said. “But I’m happy with my discount.”
Progressive was one of the first insurers to venture into what people in the industry call “usage-based” or “pay-as-you-drive” insurance. State Farm and Allstate Corp. have similar programs. Evaluating actual driving data is considered a more precise way to gauge risk compared with traditional pricing methods that factored in, such as age, gender and marital status.
